Essence of Islam
Islam is a complete religion and guide that is timelessly applicable, since it does not conflict with the developments and progress of any time or place, ensuring happiness, comfort, and tranquility for people in this life and in the afterlife.
At its core, Islam is a monotheistic faith based on the concept of Tawhid (the oneness of God) and the pursuit of "peace through submission" to the Divine will. It isn't just a set of rituals; it's a comprehensive framework for living a life of purpose, justice, and compassion.
Here is a breakdown of its essence.
The Core Creed: Tawhid
The most fundamental element of Islam is the absolute oneness of God (Allah ﷻ). This is not just a theological point; it's a worldview that holds all of humanity to be equal before one Creator.
Say, ‘He is God the One, God the eternal. He begot no one nor was He begotten. No one is comparable to Him.’
[Quran 112:1-4]
the purpose for man’s creation is to worship the Creator.
I created jinn and mankind only to worship Me, I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me, God is the Provider, the Lord of Power, the Ever Mighty.
[Quran 51:56-58]
Allah ﷻ further states that He made this life in order to test mankind so that every person may be recompensed after death for what he/she has earned
[He] who created death and life to test you [people] and reveal which of you does best––He is the Mighty, the Forgiving;
[Quran 67:2]
Seek the life to come by means of what God has granted you, but do not neglect your rightful share in this world. Do good to others as God has done good to you. Do not seek to spread corruption in the land, for God does not love those who do this,
[Quran 28:77]
We shall certainly test you with fear and hunger, and loss of property, lives, and crops. But [Prophet], give good news to those who are steadfast, those who say, when afflicted with a calamity, ‘We belong to God and to Him we shall return.’ These will be given blessings and mercy from their Lord, and it is they who are rightly guided.
[Quran 2:155-157]
The word “Islam” is an Arabic word which literally means “submission to God”, and Muslims are those who willfully submit to and actively obey God, living in accordance with His message.
Islam, a name given by Allah to this religion.
Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My blessing upon you, and chosen as your religion Islam: [total devotion to God]
[Quran 5:3]
People, We created you all from a single man and a single woman, and made you into races and tribes so that you should recognize one another. In God’s eyes, the most honored of you are the ones most mindful of Him: God is all knowing, all aware.
[Quran 49:13]
Character and Ethics (Ihsan)
The "essence" of a Muslim’s character is often described as Ihsan, which means "excellence" or "to do beautiful things." It is the internal motivation to act correctly even when no one is watching.
do good, for God loves those who do good.
[Quran 2:195]
Mercy and Forgiveness
While Islam emphasizes accountability, the overarching theme of the scripture is God's mercy. Every chapter of the Quran (except one) begins with: "In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful."
Grant us good things in this world and in the life to come. We turn to You.’ God said, ‘I bring My punishment on whoever I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. ‘I shall ordain My mercy for those who are conscious of God and pay the prescribed alms; who believe in Our Revelations; who follow the Messenger- the unlettered prophet they find described in the Torah that is with them, and in the Gospel- who commands them to do right and forbids them to do wrong, who makes good things lawful to them and bad things unlawful, and relieves them of their burdens, and the iron collars that were on them. So it is those who believe him, honour and help him, and who follow the light which has been sent down with him, who will succeed.’
[Quran 7:156-157]
Islam is the journey of aligning one's internal faith with external actions. It teaches that by recognizing a single higher power, humans can free themselves from the "worship" of material things, the ego, and social pressures, thereby attaining a state of inner peace (Salam).
